What to Know About a Career in Aesthetics
Licensed aestheticians typically must be licensed by a state board of cosmetology. A state license usually requires the following:
High school diploma or equivalent
Completion of a board-approved aesthetician program
Passing score on a state exam that includes written and practical tests
Aesthetician programs usually last 6 to 12 months and part-time, night, and weekend programs are offered at most schools. Coursework includes facials, massage, waxing, skin treatments, makeup application, anatomy and chemistry of skin care, and sanitation and disinfection practices.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for professional aestheticians is $32,040, with the top 90 percent earning $52,340. Aestheticians work in salons and spas, and some work as makeup artists in environments like photography studios, weddings, fashion shows, television, stage, or film (additional education is recommended for both stage and film). Medical aestheticians work in medical practices such as dermatology, plastic surgery, and oncology centers. Some choose to become instructors at aesthetician schools. It's a great time to launch a career as a professional aesthetician, as all skin care specialists are likely to see large gains in employment opportunities. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the industry to grow almost 38 percent due to the growing popularity of skin treatments for relaxation and general wellness.
